General Indoor Tips
According to the EPA, the average household loses about the same amount of water needed to wash 280 loads of laundry, take 600 showers or meet the average family’s water needs for a month. Some water leaks are slow and difficult to detect, yet even the smallest leaks can add up quickly. One way you can tell that you have a leak is an unexpectedly high water bill.
Water conservation indoors can mean many things. It can mean fixing leaks, changing habits so that less water is being used, or upgrading water using devices so they are more efficient.
Conserving Indoors with Efficiency Upgrades
When shopping for new water-use devices for your home like sinks, toilets, fridges, washing machine, or dishwasher, look for the EPA Watersense label. According to the EPA, the WaterSense label is an important part of a whole-house solution to save water, energy, and money while ensuring customer satisfaction.
What is the EPA water sense label? According to their website, WaterSense labeled products meet EPA’s specifications for water efficiency and performance, and are backed by independent, third-party certification. Products with these labels:
-
- Perform as well or better than their less efficient counterparts.
- Are 20 percent more water efficient than average products in that category.
- Realize water savings on a national level.
- Provide measurable water savings results.
- Achieve water efficiency through several technology options.

Indoor Conservation
Water conservation indoors can mean many things. It can mean fixing leaks, changing habits so that less water is being used, or upgrading water using devices so they are more efficient.
Shower Heads
Did you know that replacing an old shower head with a new, high-efficiency model is a way to conserve water? A standard shower head uses 2.5 gallons of water per minute, while a high-efficiency showerhead cuts usage down to 2.0 gallons per minute. Installing a high-efficiency showerhead can save you up to 2,700 gallons a year. If you need a new shower head and are an Arizona Water Company customer, you can get one through the Free Conservation Kit program. Toilets
Did you know that taking out an old toilet and replacing it with a new, high-efficiency model is a way to conserve water? Some toilets even use as much as 5 gallons per flush! New high-efficiency toilets only use 1.28 gallons per flush, reducing water usage by anywhere from 20-60%. This generates an enormous annual household water savings of up to 13,000 gallons per year! Arizona Water Company offers a toilet rebate program to its customers for the purchase of a high efficiency toilet. Washing Machines
Did you know that replacing an older washing machine with a new, high-efficiency model is a way to conserve water? Another way to conserve water with your washing machine is to make sure it is a full load. Standard washing machines typically use 19 gallons or more of water per load. High-efficiency washing machines reduce water usage by 6-12 gallons, depending on the model. If used properly, high-efficiency washing machines can reduce your household water usage by up to 80%. Some homes even have a laundry-to-landscape system where washing machine water can go to trees and other landscape plants to conserve water.
Dishwashers
Did you know that replacing an older dishwasher with a new, high-efficiency model is a way to conserve water? Another way to conserve with the dishwasher is to make sure it’s a full load. Older dishwashers use anywhere between 9-14 gallons per load, while new high-efficiency dishwashers – look for the Energy-Star label – use 3-5 gallons per load, saving thousands of gallons per year!
Sinks
Did you know that adding an aerator to bathroom sinks is a way to conserve water? Aerators work by adding air to the stream of water which reduces the amount of water going through the tap. Without an aerator, most faucets flow at a rate of about 2.2 gallons per minute, but with an aerator that’s reduced to 1.5 gallons per minute or less! The average family can save up to 700 gallons of water a year, just by adding aerators to their faucets. If you need a faucet aerator and are an Arizona Water Company customer, you can get one through the Free Conservation Kit program.
